Patou was founded in 1914 by Jean Patou but was put on the back burner during the First World War. When Jean returned from his service in the Balkans and the East, he started the brand up once more. His designs were ahead of their time, he shortened hemlines, created dresses that could be worn without a corset, and designed pleated skirts that were made to be worn on the street, not just for sport. The 1929 financial crisis took its toll on the brand as it tried to expand across the Atlantic, which is when its ingenious founder created the Joy perfume: the most expensive in the world. After Jean’s unexpected death in 1936, his sister and her husband took over the business, but they struggled without Jean’s creative impact. Queue a long line of the greatest names in fashion who each made their mark on the brand, taking it from strength to strength.
