Following an auditing trip to a Chinese factory in which they saw the factory workers’ dire living conditions, Veja founders Sébastien Kopp and François-Ghislain Morillion decided they wanted to make a change by reinventing something they wore every day and the most symbolic product of their generation: sneakers. In their research, they saw how big brands spend only 30% of the cost of their footwear on actually producing the shoe and allocate the other 70% to marketing. For their brand, they wanted to cut down on the cost of advertising and redistribute these funds to production, making it possible to create much higher quality shoes in a much more ethical way.
