Interview

Harry Goodwins

Picturesque, dreamy, a total ‘surfer boy’. This is the outer surface of this London-born male model. It’s the inner down-to-earth, curious wanderlust attitude behind this friendly and smiling soul. Exclusively for an interview with TheCornerZine, let’s meet Harry Goodwins.

On Instagram, you refer to yourself as a ‘Global Gypsy’, but tell me more deeply who’s the man behind those icy ocean blue eyes and gorgeous golden blonde locks.

The man behind the icy ocean blue eyes is a free spirit, who loves to travel and live life to the fullest. ‘No regrets’ is a motto of mine. Also, I have a huge passion for acting.

You’ve been modeling since you were 16 years old. Ten years later and here you’re beyond successful in the industry. Tell me how it all began.

It all began when I was 15 actually, I got scouted when I was shopping in London’s Oxford street, whilst on a summer break from school. It came as quite a surprise to me.

The best part of my job is, by far, the freedom and all the different people I get to meet and places I get to travel to, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

When you first started out modeling, was there ever something you were told to do on a photoshoot that made you feel very uncomfortable and you declined to do so?

I’ve never been told to do anything whilst modeling! However, when I first started I was quite uncomfortable with the whole thing, especially wearing makeup! (Laughs E.D). Overtime, I got to grips with it.

Would you say you’ve changed since modeling? And how or what has changed in the fashion industry that you’ve seen since starting?

Of course I’ve changed since modeling, as it’s been over a decade now: I’d be worried if I didn’t. The whole industry has changed, if you ask me…the influencer market and also the digital aspect have completely altered the way the industry works, but that’s just how it goes. It’s all about adapting to the current climate and demands.

What’s that one garment that you had to wear for a job and wished so badly you could bring home?

I don’t know where to start with this question! With all of the shows I’ve walked and the campaigns I don’t think there’s once been something that I didn’t want to keep, if I’m honest with you.

What would you say is the best and worst part of your job being a model?

The best part of my job is, by far, the freedom and all the different people I get to meet and places I get to travel to, I wouldn’t change it for the world. The down side is never knowing what’s around the corner. At times it can be quite strenuous not knowing when the next pay check is coming, or whether you can go on a holiday. It’s very demanding with your personal time, but again I wouldn’t change it.

You grew up in East London, but have since traveled the world with modeling. I’d like to know your favorite place you’ve visited and somewhere you have yet to go and is on your list?

My favourite place I’ve traveled to would have to be Sri Lanka, hands down. It’s such a beautiful country. I’ve yet to travel to Cape Town or South America and both are next on my list!

With all the traveling, do you end up missing your friends and family a lot? How do you deal with the constant distance?

If I’m honest with you, I actually don’t. I like to travel alone and, in terms of the distance, between social media and with WhatsApp you never seem like you’re too far away from anyone.

London compared to Milan, which do you prefer?

London is home, so it will always win! However, I love Milan and enjoy spending time here…I’d consider a move at some point.

I lived in Milan for over a year and a half and truly fell in love with the city. One of my favorite places to go was Parco Sempione, it reminded me of home in New York with the Arc. It always put me at ease as if I was sitting in Washington Square Park. Another favorite was going down to Navigli, literally anytime of the day, and could never miss the vintage market at the end of the months! What are some of your favorite areas that you’ve explored in Milan?

I’d have to agree with you when it comes to Navigli and Porta Genova in general. Those are by far my favourite areas in Milan.

Within a few minutes of scrolling through your Instagram it’s very clear that you enjoy working out. Is it ever hard to find motivation to do so? Or are you always super motivated? If so, please tell me your ways! (Laughs E.D).

I wouldn’t say I’m always motivated but I force myself to get out of bed and get on with it! Really, an hour of my day is nothing when you think about it! We happily waste that hour and sit scrolling on Instagram, might as well better yourself with that hour is what I say.

If you weren’t modeling, what would you be doing?

I’d probably be a physiotherapists or an electrician.

Is there something you’re secretly passionate about that you have yet to explore?

I’d like to start writing but haven’t tried it yet so…it’s something I’m in the process of working on.

As far as fashion, describe your personal style. What’s your go-to outfit?

My fashion style is simple: a basic T-shirt and ripped jeans or a baggy shirt. However, I do like to make an effort for a good occasion. Then, it’d be a three piece suit or a tux.

You starred on a UK reality tv show ‘Shipwrecked’, briefly tell me about that experience. And would you ever do another reality show?

The experience was great, for seven weeks I literally lived in the middle of the South Pacific, without any communication from the outside world. Truly an amazing opportunity that’s very rare. Not sure I’d do more reality tv though. Since I’m trying to pursue a more serious acting career.

Take a deep breath, close your eyes and fast forward five years. Where would you like to see yourself in work and personal life?

In five years, I will be living in California and be a successful actor with a holiday home in Italy. I’m not sure where in Italy yet though…but somewhere!
